Google is at it again. The latest update by Google will change the way websites are viewed on mobile. The update is set to roll out in early 2018, however, we can expect a soft rollout on this one. At SMX Advanced, Gary Illyes said that Google will communicate a lot before rolling out the mobile-first index. Google will be providing the webmaster a lot of guidance for the update.

“We’re thinking about how we can make sure we only include in the mobile-first index sites that won’t be hurt by the mobile-first index. The longer time frame can be several years — maybe five years — before we reach an index that is only mobile-first,” Illyes said.

While the update will come out in 2018, the webmasters and developers all around the globe have already started to make the amends on the websites. Google has already given a tool to check if the website is mobile-friendly. Nonetheless, there are a few things that you must know if you don’t want your websites to be affected by the update in the near future.

Optimize your website for mobile-first in
  • Website Speed Website speed is one of the most important parts of user experience. It is one of the first ways to check if your website will suffer from the update. There are three ways to speeding up your website:speed

    • AMP
AMP or Accelerated Mobile Pages is an open source initiative created to improve the mobile ecosystem. AMP pared with HTML loads website much faster than regular HTML. Google also saves or caches the content in the memory to load the website faster. This result is a clear, faster and sleeker user experience. You can use the plugin in WordPress to convert your pages to AMP and Instant Articles for Facebook.
    • PWA
Progressive Web Apps is an alternative to AMP. The advantages of PWA is reliability, fast user interactions, and immersive UX. You can read more here.
    • PWAMP
This term was first introduced by Gary Illyes at SMX Seattle. PWAMP is a consolidation of AMP HTML, CSS and JS. PWAMP is extremely fast and offers all the benefits of PWA. They can be considered the tool of future.

However, if your website works perfectly in the mobile domain with the right speed and great UX, then there is almost no benefit for you to move to AMP or another alternative.

  • Content management for mobile The mobile-first index will have the biggest impact on you if you use a subdomain for the mobile experience. This leads to different content on desktop and mobile sites. The rankings are based on the desktop version. The update is expected to affect the mobile version and ranking of your website. The adverse effect may lead to the removal of rank. Even if your website is mobile-friendly, you might want to optimize the content.

    • Drop-down menus

    • No Flash

    • Minimize pop-ups on mobile

    • Make the text and padding finger friendly

  • Manage and streamline the checkout process According to Think with Google research, 85% customers select the product on one device and complete the checkout process on a different device. It is necessary that you streamline the checkout process making it easier for the user to shop. Here are a few tips for you to manage and streamline the checkout process:

    • Maintain constant speed page

    • Ask to save details

    • Sleek navigation

    • Give the option to complete purchase of another device

    • Minimize the information form at checkout

    • Incorporate Apple/Android pay for easy and quick payments

    • No pop-ups

  • Don’t block images, JS or CSS Technology is different than what it was when mobile design began. It was advantageous to block CSS, JS or heavy images. However, now the mobiles have a great processor with larger memory and capacity. To go mobile-first, do not block the images (if heavy you can optimize them), Javascript or CSS. Google’s smartphone user agent GoogleBot can also handle all these elements. It also improves the whole design of your website.

  • Think mobile-first You’ll have to think mobile-first to adopt mobile-first. From design and development to user experience, everything needs to mobile-first. A responsive website is just not enough. Responsive does not mean that it is mobile-first ready. To embrace the Google’s new update, you have to change the basics.

With Google mobile-first index, the developing and designing of website is going to take a complete u-turn. It won’t be easy but it will be worth it. Once you tackle the abovementioned issues and work to make them better, you will be in a much better position with the update. Be prepared for the time Google flips the switch. Google Penguin Recovery Service

To bring improvements in the search results and addressing the various artificial inbound links related issues, Google Penguin, a member of Google algorithms, was released in April 2012. All the updates falling under penguin algorithms focus on resolving many problems. The main purpose of releasing the Google Penguin was to target various websites, violating all the webmaster guidelines, set by Google.

Google has categorized many bad links, profiles such as:

  • Links generated from poor sites.

  • All the paid links.

  • All the links coming from irrelevant sites.

  • All the keyword rich anchor tags.

  • Links full of over optimized anchor text.

There are a number of versions of Google Penguin such as 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, and many more. Among all the versions, 2.0 is said to be the next generation version with a big huge impact since the first one was rolled out. The major difference between 2.0 and 1.0 versions is that the 2.0 version is more comprehensive in nature that the other one. The 2.0 version is compatible enough to check both the internal as well as external pages and penalize the sites with irrelevant links. On the other hand, the 1.0 was only identifying home pages of the websites that were not complying with the webmaster guidelines.

The version 2.1 is not  as big as that of 2.0, but it was bigger than previous refreshes, efficient enough to check the internal website pages for spamming. Penguin 3.0 is lighter than other updates. Most of the experts find it compatible for data, but not for algorithms as it has a small impact.

If you are one of those who lost the ranking of their websites, then it’s time to regain it by bringing traffic back to your official website. As per penguin update, there are a number of recovery tips that you need to follow, in order to give the highest ranking to your professional website.

  • Use of Natural Anchor Text: Earlier anchor texts used to be spammed for increasing the highest ranking and traffic on Google Search. But once the penguin was designed, text was written in a very natural form.

  • Incorporate Social Media: It is the best way to search the content written on your friend’s social media sites such as Facebook etc. Internet gives importance to social media and as a webmaster the worst thing one can do is not to incorporate social controls on the website.

  • Give Importance To Quality Links: It is always beneficial to create links with reputed and recognized websites. Avoid giving value to irrelevant sites.

Google has been constantly evaluating and evolving its search algorithm in order to generate better results for the users. Although Google has always been very secretive about the exact mechanisms of its algorithm, they have always been very open, even instructive, about what they want from webmasters i.e. better and relevant content in easy to navigate and responsive websites. Preparing for the latest Google update Every time Google has rolled out an update to its search algorithm(since introducing Penguin) , the rankings of numerous websites have seen drastic changes. Those who were at odds with Google’s changed parameters saw their webpages shift from top results to relative obscurity on the SERPs. At the same time webmasters who followed the guidelines were catapulted to higher rankings in search results. For businesses whose revenue generation is directly related to the traffic that comes in from search results, the impact Google updates can have on the success of the business cannot be understated. The last Google update was rolled out in late 2014 and unsurprisingly it had a major impact on a large number of websites’ rankings. The Latest Google update is about to be implemented. Here’s a look at what we know about its so far.
  • The update is going to happen by the end of 2015. No exact date has been announced but expect it to come into force before the year is out.
  • This pending update will be released in real-time. This means that as Google’s search bots find websites that don’t conform to its norms they will be penalized in real time and similarly websites that adhere to Google’s diktats are likely to see a surge in their rankings in real time.
  • There is speculation that with this latest Penguin update is going to penalize websites that have spammy backlinks and are using practices that Google discourages.
So, the question remains, what do you need to do to prepare for the latest Penguin update. Whether you need to make any changes will depend upon the current practices you are using to push your website to the top of search engine results. Generally, the following are some points on which you can evaluate your website and decide if any changes need to be made. Anchor Text – Instead of exact matches of text, focus on using long tail keywords and brand related text. The aim here is to make it as easy as possible for interested users to find your webpage. Backlinks – Backlinks are going to be a major factor that this latest update  is going to address. So, it makes sense to evaluate the backlinks to your webpages to determine if any of them originate from spammy sources. If so, then have them removed or if you are unable to do that, disavow those links making it clear to Google that you have nothing to do with the origin of the backlink. Internal Links – Optimize your internal links. Again, the aim here is to provide the user, content that he or she would be interested in. Determine whether the internal links on a page are relevant to the content on that page. If you think the content on page A would make a user want to view the content on Page B then add a link. This helps smoothen the site’s internal structure and is also considered a user friendly practice by Google. With the right preparations webmasters can look forward to welcoming the Penguin update instead of dreading it. If someone with the right knowledge and using the right practices is handling your website optimization then this update is likely to have a positive impact on your site’s rankings.
In the last few months, Google has been rolling few major/minor algorithmic updates, of which the most prominent ones, about which you must get a fair understanding are Phantom and Panda 4.2. Google Phantom While Google Phantom is not as massive as many past Google updates, it still affects a good percentage of search results. Reports suggest that some of the market giants have also suffered a huge negative impact from this update. All That You Need To Know About The Recent Google Updates Google Phantom primarily targets –
  • Thin or low quality content
  • Duplicate contents
  • Ad-heavy pages
  • Irrelevant and old comments
  • Low user engagement
  • Fonts that are hard to read and understand
  • Popups
  • Confusing navigation
  • Click-bait articles
  • Complete website ( due to many low-quality pages)
Google panda 4.2 Google panda was first released on February 2011 followed by the release of Google panda 4.0 on May 20, 2014, Google panda 4.1 on September 25, 2014, and finally we know have Panda 4.2 (released on July 18, 2015). The Google Panda 4.2 mainly focuses on boosting the quality content sites while pushing down the low quality content sites. Reports suggest that about 2-3% search results have been affected with this update. Those who understand Google’s update patterns believe that it is more a ‘refresh’ than a mere update. All those who have made the required changes on their website after they were hit by the previous Panda updates saw improvements in their rankings.
