The leading lyrics site Rap Genius, which was recently panelized by Google for using irrelevant and unnatural linking is back to where it used to be. The penalty lasted for a period of ten days, during which people couldn’t find it by searching it for its name.
In one of the recent posts, the company apologized to Google and the users for the inconvenience caused, and its involvement in deceptive, artificial and manipulative linking. The website also explained the reasons why it was issued a manual action notice from the leading search engine. It also explained the strategies it followed to correct what it was objected and penalized for, and to regain its ranking.
Here is a brief overview of what the leading lyrics website did to be back in the game within ten days:
Rap genius explained that Google dictated unnatural links pointing towards the website, the reason behind penalty. Therefore, the website followed Google’s four-step approach to fix the problem. Rap Genius began by downloading list of all the links pointing to the website, which came out to the figure of 178K URLs. It then checked each and every link to find out the ones that were violating the search engine’s linking guidelines.
The manual searching of links boiled down to 3333 URLs which were potentially the problematic areas. Rap Genius contacted the webmasters of around 300 links (the faulty ones) to remove those links down or to add rel=“no follow” attribute to avoid those links from passing Page Rank. For the ones that were difficult to remove, it used ‘the disavow links tool’ for disavowing those links.
